    Description
Stunning antique Mauser Manufacturing Co. New York sterling silver cup & saucer with Lenox porcelain insert. Both cup and saucer featuring beautiful openwork/piecework tracery. Embellished with a charming beading trim and serpentine scalloped rim. The handle on the cup is composed of alternating C-scrolls and rocailles. With a Lenox porcelain insert. In overall good antique condition. No chips or cracks. One of six listed separately in my shop. Stands 3 1/4" total height. Saucer measures 4 1/4" diameter. Cup measures 3 1/4" wide across the handle, the Lenox insert has a 2 3/8" diameter opening. Total silver weight is 85.9 grams. The porcelain insert bears an early green Lenox mark. The sterling parts are hallmarked for Mount Vernon Co. Silversmiths / Mauser Mfg. Co, this mark in use from 1887-1903, of New York, NY. Also marked 925/1000 Fine, Sterling, pattern number 5735. After merging with other companies beginning in 1903, the company was eventually bought by Gorham in 1920 continuing production until 1923. Also bearing marks for the retailer M. Scooler, of New Orleans, active circa 1848-1900. Maurice Scooler was a German-born jeweler who ran a successful store on Canal Street. Although Scooler’s shop was open by 1848, it was not very large or prosperous until the last quarter of the nineteenth century. He advertised diamonds, silverware, and clocks, just off the boat and in the latest Parisian styles. In 1885 he sold World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition specialty souvenirs. At the end of the century, M. Scooler’s provided a number of the custom pins and favors for the Mardi Gras krewes.
