    Description

    Marica Caerulea
    Author:
    BRAZIL - MARICA)
    Title:
    Marica Caerulea
    Publication:
    [London]. 06- 1834
    Description:
Engraving, handcolored, sheet size 9 x 6 1/4 inches. With accompanying text sheet (adhered to verso of print with two small pieces of tape,) faint toning from tape, otherwise very good condition. A beautiful image of a Blue Marica (native to Brazil) from Joseph Paxton's "Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants." The botanical prints from this publication are distinguished by the particularly fine engraving and watercolor technique, which gives them the appearance of being watercolor paintings. S. Holden was attributed as the artist of the botanical illustrations for many of the years of publication. The magazine was published between 1834 and 1849, providing information for British gardeners on newly introduced plants suitable for their gardens and greenhouses. Where known, information was provided on the origin (where and by whom discovered) on the accompanying text sheet. Joseph Paxton, who began his career as a gardener, was knighted for his design of the Crystal Palace, the centrepiece of the Great Exhibition of 1851.
