- Theodore Thomas
was a German-American violinist, conductor, and orchestrator of German birth.  He is considered
the first renowned American orchestral conductor and was the founder and first music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
- Anton Rubinstein
was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who became a pivotal figure in Russian culture when he
founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein who founded the Moscow Conservatory.
- Amalie Materna
was an Austrian operatic soprano. While possessing a famously powerful voice, Materna also maintained a
youthful bright vocal timbre throughout her career which spanned three decades.
She is best remembered today for originating several roles in operas by Richard Wagner.
- Adelina Patti
was an Italian 19th-century opera singer, earning huge fees at the height of her career in music capitals of world.
She first sang in public as a child in 1851, and gave her last performance before an audience in 1914.
Along with her near contemporaries Jenny Lind and Thérèse Tietjens, Patti remains one of the most famous sopranos in history,
owing to the purity and beauty of her lyrical voice and the unmatched quality of her bel canto technique....

In the mid-19th century, Liszt was tearing up the polite salons and concert halls of Europe with his virtuoso performances.
Women would literally attack him:
tear bits of his clothing, fight over broken piano strings and locks of his shoulder-length hair.
Europe had never seen anything like it. It was a phenomenon the great German poet Heinrich Heine dubbed "Lisztomania."

The Shoninger Piano Company
...
One of Connecticut's most respected piano and organ manufacturers was Bernard Shoninger. B. Shoninger established his firm in 1850 in New Haven, Connecticut, and built exceptional pianos and organs throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries under the name of B. Shoninger & Company. In 1922, the company changed ownership and the name of the firm was changed to Shoninger Piano Company with offices in New York. Shoninger pianos had an excellent reputation, and the name was produced until the middle 1960s.
