Description

Here is a stunning ORIGINAL letterpress of an engraved copper block from the mid 1800s. This is not a photo copy.
This is an inked image.
Much research has gone into this ship.  Given the specifications,  most specifically the size of the funnel, this ship is from the 1850s as is the copper plate. It is a single screw sloop steamer.  Perhaps made in the UK by either Caird and Co or Tod & McGregor.   It was commissioned in the United States. It may be a military ship from the single star flag denoting an admiral's vessel. I have had many experts look at it and the common thoughts are the USS Enterprise or the civilian vessel City of New York I. The plate was done for either newsprint or a poster given the size.  The image is 8.5 inches wide approximately. and it is pressed landscape on a 11x8.5 sheet. The likes of this stamp was used as well for currency, savings bonds and stock certificates. It is that ornate.  Please inquire with any questions. I am trying to pinpoint the name of the ship and what the plate was for. I have included an advert for reference.
This is a great piece.
