Description
RARE GROUP 7 VINTAGEC.1906 3 PIECE SETS “LENOX” PORCELAIN/”GORHAM” STERLING CUPS (DEMITASSE/HOLDERS/UNDERPLATES.
Green “L” in wreath mark.
Collective weight of sterling
385 GM, 13.3 OZ.
Handle-less Lenox porcelain cups have gilded rims and are Belleek-type translucent eggshell set into reticulated GORHAM STERLING handled cup holders and cup-in-holder rests on GORHAM STERLING underplate.
No defects.
We need to explain the “Gorham” designation:
there is a three part mark that at a glance we assumed was Gorham because there’s an anchor in the center and a “G” at the right, but the left-hand mark made us pause and look again.
It’s not a lion, but a head in profile.
And that sent us to Rainwater and we were lucky to find out that the physical MAKER OF THE STERLING IS THOMAS G. BROWN NEW YORK NEW YORK, BUT RAINWATER MAKES IT CLEAR THAT BROWN USED THIS GORHAM-LIKE MARK ONLY WHEN THEY WERE PROVIDING STERLING FOR GORHAM.
So the sterling was supplied to Lenox by Gorham.
